Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

Published on May 9, 2018
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question."

  • Ok, Il keep writing my comments then

  • Thank you so much for the talk. Doing something useless or creating something useless may not always be a bad thing. In fact it could be something good to do. Like you do here, with your enthusiasm, sharing something that you really like to do, even if it looks not worthed to do, but it turns out to be a good thing. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you!

  • You are just so awesome. And what you’re doing is not at all easy - building robots?!! Keep doing it :) and I love your dry humour 🤣🤣

  • oh my God same! I thought I was the only one who put a notebook behind the presentation paper 😐

  • Why does she has a safety pin as ear loops/earrings? Hmmm????

  • As a kid she reminded me so much of Debbie from shameless xD

  • Are these ideas worth spreading, a machine to brush your teeth? I am am sure that is humanities greatest problem, brushing teeth, really.... and the justification is "at least you are asking the question"???, this is a whole new mountain of stupid

  • You don't really need a machine to brush your teeth with; there is another way, one that involves no machine, no brushing.....just some chewing. What it requires is some form of sugar-free chewing gum, a dab of toothpaste, and some medium-fine grained sand (like beach sand, for instance). You chew the gum a bit to get it nice and malleable, then spit it out and flatten it down as much as you can. Then you add that dab of toothpaste, and sprinkle some sand on top, then kind of roll that gum back up so the toothpaste and sand is inside a new little ball. Then just pop that sucker back in your mouth and chew away....The toothpaste will deal with bacteria and whitening, the sand will handle the "scrubbing" to get the crud off your teeth, and the gum is mostly there to keep the whole process going, and because trying to "chew" on just paste and sand really doesn't seem at all effective or particularly easy......

  • Well, that’s mind blowing! But what’s more mind blowing is that this app called BenePit.io will give you token just by making regular phone calls and watching ads!

  • Simone Giertz, make a machine that can hit the like button for me!!

  • Her parents liked this video. So they made her.

  • Hey Simone Giertz! Hoping you'll still read this. This may be not so important for you but for me it is. I never knew we're experiencing the same problem. I also love making things out of my imaginary. The difference only is I'm still stuck in that problem.😅 And this video completely inspired me.. I'm very thankful that TED Talk made this video.. Thank you so much.😁

  • So that’s why I wasn’t adopted

  • Useless is also useful

  • good job.

  • If you have a reason to do something, then that action is not useless. It may see like it is, but it really isn't.

  • ابي الفديو مترجم؟

  • more ROVER i got interested in building robots 4:52

  • Simone Girtz your superb, I've learnt so much from you and really I'm stunned .

  • I'm sorry but this wasn't even worthy of a TedX talk 🤣

  • Why are people loving this so much?

  • No.. We shouldn't build useless things. That's why were struggling to weigh mass depopulation through war to secure resources for our mindless mass. We could be diverting resources from things like calculators that exist digitally in all smartphones to increasing the standards of all in one devices. At the same time increasing standards for AI learning systems to make VIRTUAL useless things to look for things that can be used in needed things. Sorry sweety, but in the real world, disease logic ends with APEX reasoning, and that means who is left alive. Please don't inspire that.. Because we have disease warlabs between heavily populated areas of the mass world wide ON PURPOSE. G20..

  • So funny 😂

  • My parents did a good job with me!

  • I love that shirt! And loved yout presentation!

  • so funny, l loved it and just subbed!

  • That's hard work and dedication👌. Remember, even in your failures, you inspire others... If I could give you a hug, I would...

  • Strike for process not perfection (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡

  • the best person

  • is so dope! :)

  • The world needs more people like Simone. She is genuinely curious, intelligent and seems to see the good in everything.

  • I've reinvented my life - took me longer than her to figure that out! I'm carving out a niche for myself inventing >VERY< useful things. See PrepNserve.com It has been a long haul but once you realize it is the journey and it's supposed to be fun, it all flows better. She has some hilarious videos (the vegetable cutter would work well with my product! One container could hold all the digits she cuts off). Performance anxiety? Nope! She totally overcame that!

  • The fact that TED is now putting content out like THIS is proof that TED is just a joke now.

  • I hate that the crowd didnt laugh at some of her jokes. That was rude.

    • +alexa o I would seek better one liners

    • +Studio Papa its called being polite my guy. Unless its your friends (if you have any) in which they dont give a care if you laugh or not, you should at least give a chuckle even if its not that funny if its an acquaintance or someone not as important. How would you like it if you thought of an original joke that you are pretty proud of and you tell a large group of people and everyone doesnt care and stays silent

    • not really, i don't endlessly suck people's toes for no reason.

    • +Studio Papa thats a sad life u living bro

    • +alexa o yes

  • One of the best talks. Really funny, one can't understand why was the audience so quite

  • *Stand up comedy + Innovation*

  • She's so cute ~~😍😆👏
