The History of Satellites documentary

Published on Aug 11, 2017
Strong enough to survive their fiery launch into orbit, sophisticated enough to provide life-saving images or relay tens of thousands of phone calls at the same time. By monitoring weapons systems and troop movements, these "eyes in the sky" may be the difference between security and annihilation. From the futuristic visions of a British sci-fi writer to creations of a German rocket designer for the Nazi war machine to the Cold War technological race, we review the satellites that link our world.

  • Also 8:14 Good thing it didn't have a toilet seat. #deadlikeme

  • 3:22 In the early days of the US atom bomb program they fired one at the bottom of a shaft; the steel and concrete plug was caught in one frame from a high speed camera and its probable velocity was easily enough to get out of Earth's gravity well. Whether it went up in an adequately straight line is anyone's guess, but it is fun to contemplate the idea of a glorified manhole cover zooming across the galaxy at enormous speed.

  • The USA is always second rate.

  • It's "Hubble", not "hobble."

  • At 40:00 they launch a satellite from the space shuttle and it just slowly rising up over the tail of the space shuttle! Hmmmm! The shuttle moves at 17000 mph. So the satellite moves forward at 17000 mph (speed of shuttle) then it's pushed gently up from the cargo hull in a way that makes it clear the tail fin of the shuttle, it's even rotating. So at what angle is it launched to stay clear of the fin? How do they stop the rotating motion? When it gets to it's location (altitude) it needs to ''park'' in that position! If that is done with rockets (thrusters) then it will be impossible if it is rotating at the same time! How does it track signals (landmarks) spinning like that? I thought that technology was based on directional signals. WHAT A JOKE!!!!

    • blown : You might find this interesting, especially the section "Flight Sequence" science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/technology/sts-newsref/carriers.html Also, the following are relevant. digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=1452&context=smallsat Satellite launchers on Shuttle us-tv.org/tv/video-ZLOMolslC9Y.html Satellite deployment (IUS)

    • Rob Burnett What has '' orbital dynamics '' to do with my questions regarding launch of objects from the shuttle. Orbital dynamics don't kick in until the object is in position? Next your gonna tell me that '' La Grange'' the sweet spot is real too? I still call BS on them. I wouldn't be surprised if their high altitude photos came from their use of the Blackbird ( SR71), they used them until 1999. No wonder they burn $ 50 mil. a day, vintage machinery is costly to maintain!!!!!

    • blown215 wow yout way off....look up videos on orbital dynamics...ita pretty straightforward and very intereating...

  • I feel sorry for Laika

  • Love it, comments show people are on to your bullshit, they wakin up!!!

  • more space bullshit, satellites don't exist.

  • did anyone see at 0:07 the satellite is hanging from a cable?

    • There is no visible cable on my screen.....

    • Lester Awalt don’t think it’s hanging from a cable. I can almost remember what’s going on there, but not quite sure ... I think they were repairing Hubble and putting its glasses over the lenses

    • lol, the first obvious sign that its not a satellite is the astronaut working on it, where do you think he came from? Maybe an addition to the ISS

  • Not to confuse intellect with intelligence. War is everything BUT intelligent!!

  • Am old Doku... Another clik bite! :(

  • Law enforcement does not own these corporation businesses that the alcohol vendors order or they would not have any to purchase the laws of the great depression

  • People are bothered by texting and texting cones from satslites to each person's phones they watch tv.people are having psychological socialising problems their parents have died they have lost their wisdom wall.drinking beer whiskey are their problems to these alcohol corporations

  • I haven’t watched this yet but It’s guaranteed there’s not 1 real image of a satellite. In space or otherwise. It’s propaganda. Tell a lie enough times it becomes real

  • Fucking. Liars.

  • RIGHT HERE! YOU BRAINWASHED PEOPLE ARE DISGUSTING! Satellites ARE MORE NASA LIES! NOBODY HAS EVER "GONE TO OUTER SPACE," IT DOES NOT EXIST! GENESIS 1 CLEARLY TEACHES WE LIVE INSIDE A FIRMAMENT CPNSISTING OF WATER ABOVE AND AROUND US! THE EARTH IS FLAT!

  • "satellites are made from the strongest and lightest materials on earth" > i believe that, but don't show me this thin aluminium foil wobbeling arround - and expect me to believe. show me a satellite in space from earth by telescope or similar - or cool this mofo to more than -200 celsius and demonstrate it still works.

  • sputnik

  • doug

  • penned 2001 cancer won...

  • Under sea cables, the stratosphere bounce, cell towers and communication towers.... It's all bullshit fantasy this documentary. They are lying to your indoctrinated ugly faces. It's all fake, clark made it up, and NASA follow.

  • cant launch anything into space :D tell that to the tesla out there

    • There is no tesla out there, The plastic on the car would melted from the suns heat, Thats nothing but a cartoon

  • History of CGI

  • why don't they show actual pictures of the satellites? It's all computer animation. Surely they have information that the launching and placement into orbit worked and that all is well. Show the pictures!

    • check astronomy . com, they have tons of amateur satellite photography.

  • ... or is it just more round earth brainwashing ...hmmmm

  • learned a lot ... i think

  • Also, apparently invisible to the human eye and photography.

    • Jesusssssssss.. I wouldn't call that "mediocre" lol. If only more people had stuff like that we could stop the current state of human devolution. Nice bit of kit bud.

    • Someone should just buy a mediocre telescope, you can see plenty of shit up there.. Damn internet scientists..

  • arthur c clak didn't write 2001, he wrote a short story called 'the sentinel', this is the base which inspired kubric to make the movie, he worked with clark on the novel, the movie was made and the book came out latter as a companion to the film.

  • Any satellites on Uranus?

    • any in yours?

  • bla bla ,,,, a waste of time

  • its all fake

  • Interesting how they though satellites would be all the rage by this point. I think the internet threw a huge spanner in the works for that plan. To be fair though, we still need satellites, just not as directly as they thought.

  • China gets a speeding ticket

  • us-tv.org/tv/video-IPScpDo2WOY.html

  • Though interesting this video is old and largely out of date.

    • I'll take old and largely out of date over most of the new content history channel produces.

  • 36:37 Huh, whats liquid weights got to do with solar cells? Did anyone thing we have diesel generators orbiting the planet?

  • Please could you provide the sources.

  • Is the narrator David Lynch ?

Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) died prior to the invention of the Telescope. 1610 Galileo Galilei, claims to see Spaceballs orbiting about one another. Galileo is a beneficiary of the Jesuit payroll. *1611* Christopher Clavius, a Jesuit at the Collegio Romano, confirms Galileo’s observations of planetary motion. Jesuits claim that Lights they observe through their Telescopes are in fact Spaceballs that orbit about one another. *The reader will note, that from this point on "verifiable reality" has been replaced with Theoretical Math Equations (pretend).* 1687 Sir Isaac Newton, invents the theory of Gravity establishing a friction-less environment required for Spaceballs to orbit about one another. 1798 Sir Henry Cavendish invents the MASS of the Earth and the Mass for all other Spaceballs. • Why do flat earthers always connect "heliocentrism" immediatly with "globe", as if peiple believed in a flat earth before heliocentrism? The globe model is far older than the helicentrric model. Before Copernicus, people believed in a geocentric model with a sphere shaped earth. The shape of the earth is very obvious. We don't need observation of space for it. Instead we know how the earth looks like because we have travelled it.

  • Satellites they would not be here without one man Arthur C. Clark. When he wrote 2001 Space Odyssey no one had heard of a satellite that was until Ruscosmos launched that little basketball sized satellite named Sputnik The Space Race was on. Today satellites are everywhere. Without satellites no weather, no phones, no GPS, no national defense, no space science, no Dish Network or Direct TV, no Google Earth, no internet, and no US-tv. All of these come from satellites. GOES which is a decedent of TIROS makes sure blizzards, fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes don't destroy us,. LANDSAT takes all our Google Earth images and without it we would be lost. GEOCOMM provides our GPS signals. Telecom satellites transmit our phone calls and operate the internet and US-tv they also transmit DISH and Direct TV. Military Satellites are classified their job is to keep crazy dictators like Kim Jong from attacking us. The largest satellite of them all is Space Station ISS this is where all our science is done. TDRS operates the NASA network every satellite talks to TDRS. and over them all looking out into deep space are the probes one of these is Hubble which allows us to see the stars. But as we put them up there there is the ever growing problem of Junksats which are the dead satellites and their boosters. We need to get them out of orbit or our satellites will be lost.

    • You really are stupid aren't you? So sad.

    • Mauricio Eduardo Santana thats what I meant. Clark wrote the script with Kubrick and he also wrote the book around this time. No one heard of a satellite until 2001 came out and Von Braun and Kerolev read his work and this lead to the Space Race and Explore and Sputnik heading to space.

    • he didn't write 2001, he wrote a short story called 'the sentinel', this is the base which inspired kubric to make the movie, he worked with clark on the novel, the movie was made and the book came out latter as a companion to the film.

  • I love the name "keyhole" because it's basically saying "we're watching you when you can't see us"

  • There's no history here! maybe for women and just old people! but for history of satellite(s) NO , maybe (the) satellite invention. Maybe someone could put true history meaning #1 satellite till the last one, on utube?

    • J that's the first thing I thought when I heard the Modern Marvels intro theme....

  • FAKE

    • Joel Harris the MOON is not real.

    • David Holcomb I got a p900 and have been filming the eclipses. Sun and moon are local, for sure, and during the last lunar eclipse, the shadow comes from behind the moon

    • all the comments are months old except yours and we are only hours apart. i agree. satellites are FAKE. theres PROOF ON MY CHANNEL

  • 4:40 @elonmusk

    • commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glorification_of_the_Eucharist_-_Salimbeni.JPG

  • First 30 minutes = history of american space programme

    • One lie after the other! Space program my ass! Deep underground military base program is what they should have named NASA, but then nobody would give their tax dollars to these lying bastards if they told the truth! Genesis one will explain that to you

    • "complaining"? You are mad

    • oh no no no no no he was complaining that theres too much about american satellite history and not enough about world satellite history that it's messy that it makes the docu look biased because it's glorifying satellite that americans built and instead of technology from different countries that should have improved satellites and what about european designs or the uk or something or that it is not cool if that is what the docu is like and that the docu doesn't explain the full story so that americans look like theyre solely responsible for modern satellite designs and its glorifying americans so hes complaining that its not about china or something

    • oh I understand it alright we would not have satellites in space without getting our space program started. It was the Cold War and we were fighting our long time rival and enemy The Russians. WWII just ended and Roscosmos and NASA captured the two scientist who would build and launch these satellites Von Braun and Kerolov. The problem was in the early space race every rocket and every satellite the Russians and the US launched was built by the rivals of our great rocket pioneers and the end result was they blew up on the launchpad. Von Braun and Kerolov went to the government and both of them became the directors or Ruscosmos and NASA and they fixed the designs. But Russia got to space first and put that little basketball sized satellite name Sputnik in orbit three months later on my birthday Explore was launched and NASA has established its foothold in space and since that launch we have been putting the satellites up there. the problem now is the so called junksats which are dead satellites and tools left in space with discarded engines. These need to be deorbited because they are a hazard to navigation and they can kill our astronauts.

    • aaron at least you didn't understand his comment

  • Can we create a satellite that can see under ground from space,

  • Interesting! Aziz

  • How do satellites fly around the flat earth?

    • Squarely

    • they fall

    • They don't. The Earth is a disc that flips (hence day and night). Satellites just stay where they are, only taking photos when the disc is at its roundest.

    • They would probably say that they circle over the flat earth, circling the "north pole".. Yup, up there just a few miles over the disc shaped earth, right next to the sun and moon which also circle overhead....... Knuckleheads.

    • How does a Flattard get into college? He/she/it doesn't, it remains stuck on stupid perfecting the tin foil hat.

  • Cool beans! Glad to find this on youtube

    • EleMental Science. Ill sure try to keep that in mind pal!

    • joe bob please never say that again

  • Where are all of the "Satellites don't exist" guys at?

    • Fuk Hue what sattelites?

    • Fuk Hue they don’t. This is propaganda. Just started watching and in the intro the lies start

    • Look above your stupid comment

    • Joel Harris. I checked your link... Its a hologram... You know? Like fake planes on 911??? (Sarcasm)

    • Joel Harris. I'm right here bro!
