Legged Robot Testing in Desert

Published on Oct 4, 2013
Legged Squad Support System (LS3) is a four-legged robot designed to travel 20 miles on rough terrain carrying 400 lbs of load. The video shows field testing at Twentynine Palms, CA. Testing includes rough-terrain mobility, endurance, visually guided following, GPS guided maneuver, and overall reliability. LS3 is being developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA and the US Marine Corps. For more information visit our website at www.BostonDynamics.com.

  • Well, at least it's quieter than the drunk guys carrying a couch

  • If I didn’t know any better I’d say it was a screen from Star Wars lol

  • Softbank owns this company now. Wow this company’s gone through a lot in 5 years. From Google to X then to Softbank.

  • Exclusive death stranding footage.

  • So why no saddle on top? Feels like wasted potential here. Ok maybe you wouldn't use a supply carrying robot as a horse... BUT... you could technically strap a wounded person that can't walk on it?

  • _Wow, this CGI is so realistic!_

  • Why is an overweight cow climbing a desert hill?

  • 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

  • It'd be awesome if you could test your cheetah robot out in the desert. I'd love to see it in the open and off the treadmill.

  • So the Marine Corps is funding it. That can't end badly...

  • 소 한마리가 따라가는거 같네

  • Put it in Atlanta when it snows....that bastard will go nowhere....

  • Hey! My old stomping grounds. Yup, looks just as I remember it.

  • Fallout is becoming real.

  • Better, less loud and scary than Big Dog.

  • The only bad thing about this beautiful peace of technology is that its only purpose is for military use.

  • Nuclear or eletric power?

  • You need two more legs, one on each side of the body facing perpendicular to the flank. Only used for stability and precision driving!

  • Oh it's this thing, Big Dog, it's so old. I thought this project was put to rest for being too cumbersome and loud?

  • This needs to be used in Puerto Rico right now if not already. Please loan FEMA this.

  • nice

  • YEP.... welcome to tatooine!!!0:49

  • We have seen the future... ...of Mexico

  • Nice to hear that they scrapped the 2-stroke generator. Pun intended.

  • Your tax dollars at work. If American personnel are so precious, perhaps it is time to give up the empire.

  • Matre hust walk

  • Wiw so li g ago Gtf giid gtr kiftl fkye luel

  • Utes ptkb natdbendff mucj mow. Wow dugnfretsaap. V?

  • Owe sossosld iagqow wiseen.

  • Carlos donde chingaos estamos güey. Carlos: cálmate yo me sé el camino Atte misa sinfonía

  • And here we are in the easy part of the gobi desert....a Robot Cow has been walking around meanwhile on another place in the world the Robot Cow is living in antartica

  • BostonDynamics you need to at least release one video of someone riding this at full speed haha

  • I really wonder. All this robot. Ai or remote control?

  • Extensive and useless

  • Saddle on and you're set

  • Fallout 5 looks good

    • +DeathRanger 935 you mean starfield hahaerhhaerhart

    • You mean 76 heh heh heh hehehehehhehehehehegdgehhdhsgdhdheuecisjsjsuz

  • put a saddle on that thing and ride it

  • atv is soo out of style

  • epic scifi story about a lonely wanderer and his robofriend

  • is it supposed to be a rhinoceros

  • you almost feel sorry for it

  • M.U.L.E

  • If that thing can carry 400 pounds, I wouldn't be walking, I'd be riding it!

  • That looks like a fallout cutscene xD the rusty robot, with the camo-guy...

  • Wouldn't it be cool to be a space cowboy riding on one of those things?

  • that compressor sound?

  • skynet

  • Does it Run on Sun Energy? Cause That would be useful for the Desert part! X3

  • Put a few armed robots at the northern border of the US to keep the Canadians from bringing their cheap beers over here, ehem.

  • Google bought this company so now the military can't use any robots... You know who can though? GOOGLE. You search up bing one day on Google on accident and all of a sudden a 7 foot tall robot breaks your door down and snaps your neck. The future is now friends, the Google world order is upon us

  • This robots name should be mule:)

  • Building robots ay? You know who does something like that? A Synth

  • Are these used by the military yet?

    • Karuiko they turned it down, it's too loud

    • +Blizsteronmyballsack Thing is when Google buys a company they usually don't interfere with their intentions, unless it includes something they're against, like probably war.

    • +Karuiko Not yet. They are being funded by DARPA (US Army) and tested on the field but we are maybe a decade away from deployment.

  • wow that new fallout game looks so realistic!

  • ....cool technology and all even great in that fact but dam that noise it make tho only draw back and if you switch to electronic it be quit but still wont last longer or take to long to re charge

    • +yo bro Check their newer robots, much more quite and capable.

    • but other than the noise this is awesome!! Have you seen the human like robot? it's crazy amazing

  • How does this do in mud?

    • +Pablo Lanier I assume that would be the same as snow with the small difference that mud restricts you when lifting your foot. Given it's 4 leg's it should be ok on large puddles but anything bigger and it would need less weight or larger feet.

  • Someone needs to teach that thing what "noise discipline" is.

    • +Khunark Well... If the target is deaf.

    • +I really miss Cybertron... its not like they give it a gun and expect it to sneak up on the enemy

  • Do electric sheep dream of androids?

    • +orangevity dude, it's 1 guy 1 jar

    • I clutched my sphincter reading that comment!

    • LMAO orangevity your last comment is hilarious

    • Secretly butt hurt? SECRETLY?!? I'm more butt hurt than that one dude with that one jar. However, much like Goatse, I'm very open about it. Additionally, you're right - I am just as bad, but I can never resist a good dick joke.

    • Well you're just as bad for doing the same Secretly butt hurt

  • only dudes from Boston would build this without a saddle

  • Dumbest comments fucking EVER

  • Future AT-AT.

  • This is our dark future...

  • Come along Jeffry!

  • So cute in the snow

  • just imagine one of these loaded with an communication and information AI. Soon....

  • This video needs the M.U.L.E. theme.

  • This is the new movie from George Lucas? :)

    • Omg, i wish they had something like atlas for C3P0 and not a human walking round in plastic 😂 that always annoyed the shit outta me.

    • +Tvoje roura I don't see any unnecessary CGI.

    • +Tvoje roura oh...ok

    • +BigEvan96 What?? That was a joke directed at the old Star Wars. It reminds location. This whole movie is like from the future.

    • +Tvoje roura Pretty bad joke.

  • Isn't this a Donald Trump project to run after Mexicans that cross the border...

    • +Ahmed Boudjani No in the Bernie adminstration this would be used to catch rebels trying to flee from USSA Mother America

    • +Ahmed Boudjani lol Sanders is just as anti immigration as Trump. He's just not that vocal about it.

    • +BigEvan96 Bernie would train of these mech bulls to run after Trump...

    • No it's Bernie Sanders program.

  • Google owns this company and stop all contracts

  • Robotic Brahmin, Next we'll probably get Robobrain and Mr Gutsy. And China is getting acquainted with Alaska as well recently, So get ready to grab your vault tickets soon folks.

    • Dont forget creepy cowboy securitrons that follow you around and scare the shit out of you when you see it.

    • A nuclear fallout is becoming a reality.

  • future of aggriculture.....

  • Just make it faster, add a tail and head, give it the A.I. social robots have make it quieter, slightly smaller, and a claw on it's back to function like a hand and bam there you go your new best friend.

  • You should strap some armour plating to it and test some weapons against it!

  • Why you carrying your bag and a robot is following you.that should be its job

  • If it'll take out the trash and get me a beer out of my fridge, I'll buy one.

  • Is the Man the Leader or is the Robot Driving him across the Endless Desert as a Sheepdog drives a Sheep?

  • why not just get a donkey? loudass clunky thing gonna give away your position

  • Why are they so loud? I wonder about the engine.

  • What about making a mechanical bull so that the crazy bullfight people would stop making suffer bulls?

    • +Ahmed Boudjani surprise robots will be doing that to the humans that capture when they take over the world. only the human won't survive you'd finally destroy one and a machine would open up and plop out on from a shelf containing hundreds of them

    • +Ahmed Boudjani hat's a cool idea, I'd watch that, man versus machine.

  • Will Smith and Kevin Kline are great in this movie.

  • Use these on Korea!!!

  • I want to ride one of these to work

  • I kinda wanted the guy leading it to be clicking his tongue like you would with a horse.

  • Impressive tech - but don't overlook how useful - and cheap - a donkey supplied with a sack of carrots can be.

    • +boltar2003 "Stubborn as a mule" is more than just a phrase...

    • +The Bellman Sorry, meant a mule.

    • +The Bellman No, but an ass can.

    • +boltar2003 A donkey can't carry over 300 pounds on it's back for any useful distance.

  • Next make one powered by an i6. Then a nuclear reactor. Molten Salt, preferably. Then build a Metal Gear.

    • and put the israeli throphy system on it and bullet proof it. It will be indestructable

    • +Gordon Freeman hmmm... Gordon Freeman supporting i6, Nuclear power, and Metal Gear, and also into three sentences..WAIT A MINUTE then that means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GODDAMMIT where is HL3??????????????????????????????????

    • Dark energy from combine.

  • omg it's kinda cute o.o

  • It looks like a cow

  • Has Boston Dynamics ever considered that they could make a ton of money by offering a ride on one of these through the desert? Seriously, charge like $50 and the cost of gas to power this thing and you could make some serious money.

    • They're generally for military usage. There's probably going to be injured soldiers "riding" them, if that counts

    • lol more like $2000 for a ride.... I'm pretty sure camels cost more to rent-and-ride than $50

    • Considering the cost of a single one of these robots, I doubt that it would be a good business model...

  • It would be possible to mount it?

  • Could it be sent to a planet or a moon within the solar system as a rover? That is what first came to mind when I first saw this model, seemingly moving up the hill with care not to step into instability, and keeping good balance.

    • It uses too much power for something like that

    • +Light Yagami saying how much it can hold I feel like it would be used for holding equipment on mars or the moon or just on earth

    • +Light Yagami It's designed to carry 400 pounds of gear. Easily enough for a multitude of scientific equipment. And it could run on a compact nuclear core like the Curiosity rover.

    • The question is, how would it be used? I mean you can use it like a rover, studying things, but wouldn't that be kinda hard? And you have to put a bunch more instruments. But i have to agree with you, send it to mars

  • Still reminds me of the Hunter from Half-Life 2.

  • I imagine this as the end of the world and 99% of humans are dead because of an Alien invasion or conscious robots, this guy is wondering and his Pet Robot Dog is loaded with tech to scan for dangers. He has a Recon Petman half a mile out, his robot dog communicated with Recon Petman and tells it where the threats are.

  • am i the only one thinking that this is one of the most unnecessary machines ever created. i mean wtf...use a mule or 10 mules if required. or maybe use biotechnology or stem cell research to breed stronger mules..nothing that hasnt been done before....and biological systems will always be better than machines due to their ability to adapt..they will also be cheaper. mules eat grass, and this stupid junk guzzles fuel....another example..ever heard of the Hercules beetle, it can lift 850 times of its own weight, and it eats ROTTING ORGANIC MATTER!!!!!!..not saying we can replicate this, but this where we must be focussing...

    • I think so too!

    • oh that:)...nice thinking but aint gonna happen..real or mechanical people wont ride mules till they have cars..

    • Actually, I am not totally for mechanical transportation because of the huge impact it has on the climate; when I saw these mechanical mules I right away thought of the possibility of getting back the millions of km2 of fertile land wasted just for roads...

  • this is so crazy. sci-fi is just science now

  • Its running out of gas! We have to hire a donkey insted

  • Sorry Boston Dynamics engineers, but you forgot the tail; how could you miss that?

    • +Derek Leung You're right, maybe the mule version 2.0 will have one! ;)

    • Tails found in animals are actually very important in balancing itself

  • this dude can easily used to send to 'mars' and 'moon' ..delivering important tools to the expedition robot and could be used for fast exploration and expedition .

    • +patrick costigliolo ..U r right about the cost of sending these, This might not be possible in the present but could be the the near future, If enough compnies like 'TESLA' Virgin will be promoted and invested, It's near possible to have Electric Propulsion systems of some kind, infact boing is already working on nuclear engines for their air crafts, ALL there is needed a better Vision, Planning, Political Will and Intention...!

    • Oh. I guess I was in the right comment after all.

    • But, good sir, you forget how absurdly expensive that would be. Did you know that it costs over 100 dollars per GRAM to send stuff into space?

    • oops, wrong comment.

    • But, good sir, you forget how absurdly expensive that would be. Did you know that it costs over 100 dollars per GRAM to send stuff into space?

  • Who's a good boy? YOU ARE! Yes you are! I want one...... I will train it and raise it as my own ... XD

  • That thing is huge! lol
