Retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink suggested in a Business Insider interview that everyone should wake up at 4:30 a.m. So that's exactly what BI producer Emma Fierberg did for one work week.

  • you don't flip a switch and get the benefits in the same way Willink does. you have to build the discipline over time. short of a significant event, people don't change behavior drastically overnight or in a weeks time like this. sure, you might see a slight boost in productivity throughout one week, but the intensity won't last and you'll likely crash. that's exactly why this girl paints her nails while Willink does dead lifts and writes books. start with small steps and work your way up. children don't work 8 hours a day because they don't have the discipline for it. start with a workout, healthy diet, and a designated time of the day or week to put in work towards long-term goals outside of occupational work. increase the intensity of each as the discipline builds. sleep schedules also depend a lot on one's particular lifestyle. it doesn't matter that you wake up at 4:30 am, only that you wake up and discipline yourself. you can get the same effects at any time of the day. don't forget to reward yourself appropriately, too. balanced work and reward systems are the key to happiness. the reward typically comes after the work, but so long as there's a balance at the end of the week, you'll have the same result. if it suits you, wake up to reward and grind later, so long as you don't skip the grind. too much unearned reward and you'll get depressed. too much unrewarded work and you'll get burnt out. i think that sums it up best, just don't reward yourself for nothing and don't restrict reward when you deserve it. keep your short-term rewards appropriate so that they allow long-term rewards to come to fruition. that's it.

  • It gets easier, work crappy jobs for low wage with no sleep for most of your life. Before you know it you can work 14 HR shifts with no sleep and just barely get buy.

  • 4:30 am.. you cant make noises, every store is closed... plus you've got to go to bed at 20:30 pm... which means less daylight hours being used, no night parties, no night movies, having to deal with noises because nobody is bed but you... etc etc etc... wouldnt it be better to try to learn how to be productive at a different time??.. like the rest of the humanity??

  • Used to work at a donut shop where I had to wake up at 3am everyday. It was terrible since I have insomnia. Now I work at a different donut shop and wake up at 4 am. Never have I ever been so appreciative of waking up at 4 😂 (better than at 3am)

  • This guy's book contradicts a wealth of scientific data. His stuff about sleep-discipline being "one-size fits all" is incorrect. The point of military discipline is not to be a self-help process, it is meant as a selection process; precisely because few people are well suited for that lifestyle. It is not healthy for everyone.

  • every time anyone will try this, it ll point the weaknesses to adjust. i would be in keto or intermitent fasting, eating as much green as possible for a healthy microbiome. Picture a Ferrari and that you still feeding diesel. if you want this optimum healthy lifestyle , only putting 100% effort will work. anything else will still be miserable. cheers.

  • The army trains them to do this for their benifit. Not the soilders. A lack of sleep is scientifically proven to have very negative affects. Now theres no reason you cant do this exact thing with the proper amount of sleep. That being said ive spent most of my life sleeping 5-6 hours and i usally wake up rested but i do feel better when i sleep longer.. I guess it varys per person lol.

  • What she feels is nothing. Thousands if not millions of people do this because they have jobs. My dad has to sleep at around 8-9 PM as he wakes up at 2:15 to go to work. It’s then a hour long drive to LA. Now I understand she has no reason to be up this early as her job doesn’t require her to but it’s just to say that this is what most workers go through. I used to have a TERRIBLE sleep schedule. Waking up at 6:30 AM was a pain and I often woke up late because my sister has zero period PE and had to be there by 7:10 AM. Now I’ve forced myself to wake up at 6:00 or 5:55 to wake up, get dressed, brush my teeth and do my hair then give my puppy food and take him out for potty then take him to the backyard. It would be interesting to walk him but it’s still too dark at 6:00 and about 38 degrees outside and while that may not be much for others, it’s still cold.
